Korean Family Records in English: Apostille Without Translation

Korean Family Records in English: Apostille Without Translation

The short answer: if you need Korean family documents in English, look first at the Supreme Court's English Certificate. It is a separate certificate that states details about you, your parents and your spouse, as well as your own birth and marriage, in English — and because it is eligible for e-Apostille, you can get the apostille online free of charge. Keep in mind, though, that it is not a word-for-word English version of the Family Relation Certificate, so first check that it contains everything the receiving institution asks for.

At a glance

  • The English Certificate is “a separate certificate, not an English Family Relation Certificate”; it shows you, your parents and spouse, and your birth and marriage details in English.
  • It is listed under the Supreme Court section of e-Apostille, so you can get a free apostille without visiting an office.
  • If you need information on children or siblings, or a detailed history, you may have to translate the Family Relation Certificate, Basic Certificate or similar documents.
  • The deciding factor is whether the receiving institution accepts the English Certificate or requires a notarized translation.

What exactly is the English Certificate?

The e-Apostille website describes the Supreme Court's English Certificate as “a certificate in which matters concerning the applicant, the applicant's parents and spouse, and the applicant's birth and marriage are stated in English (a separate certificate, not an English Family Relation Certificate).” In other words, instead of translating the Family Relation Certificate, Basic Certificate and Marriage Relation Certificate one by one, it gathers in English the key facts that foreign authorities most often ask about.

For how and where it is issued, check official guidance such as the Supreme Court Electronic Family Relationship Registration System. If your goal is an apostille, the simplest route is to handle issuance and the apostille together on e-Apostille from the start.

Can the English Certificate replace a translation?

If the receiving institution accepts English documents and the information it needs falls within your own, your parents' and your spouse's details and your birth and marriage details, you can submit the English Certificate with an apostille and skip translation. Overseas marriage procedures, identity checks and residence procedures, which focus on core identity details, are typical examples.

On the other hand, if you must prove a parent–child relationship (for example, a visa with accompanying children, or an inheritance), if the institution specifies a “Family Relation Certificate” by name, or if it requires a language other than English, you may need to translate the existing certificates instead.

How does it compare with translating the Family Relation Certificate?

Translating the Family Relation Certificate means an apostille on the original plus translation work, and depending on the institution, notarization of the translation and an apostille on the notarized translation — more steps. The English Certificate is already in English when issued, so those steps drop away. The trade-off is that its contents are fixed, so you first need to confirm they match the institution's requirements.

Checking first whether an English-language government certificate exists can sometimes remove the translation step entirely.

How should I check the spelling of names?

English documents cause the least confusion when your name matches the English name in your passport. Also check in advance that the English spelling of your parents' and spouse's names matches your other documents (passport copies, marriage documents and so on).

Check before using the English Certificate

  • Whether the receiving institution accepts English documents
  • Whether the information needed falls within you, your parents and spouse, and your birth and marriage details
  • Whether the institution has specified a particular document such as the “Family Relation Certificate”
  • Whether you need to prove a parent–child relationship
  • Whether the spelling matches the English name in your passport
  • Whether the Apostille Convention is in force for the destination country (if not, consular confirmation)

We check against the receiving institution's requirements whether the English Certificate will work or a translation is needed.

If I have the English Certificate, do I still need a notarized translation?
