Authentication Process for Submission to the UK

How do you prepare Korean documents for submission to the UK? The basic flow is as follows.

① Document issuance→ ② Notarization (for private documents)→ ③ Check if English translation is needed→ ④ Apostille→ ⑤ Submit to the receiving agency in the UK
As an original Convention signatory, the UK uses the single-step apostille process. Separate consular authentication or embassy legalization is not required.

Guide by Purpose for Submission to the UK

Required documents vary by receiving agency and situation, so the following are representative documents for reference only and not a definitive list.

International Marriage

The marriage relations certificate and family relations certificate may be used, but the exact required list needs confirmation.

Employment/Migration

The criminal record report and degree certificate may be used, but the exact required list needs confirmation.

Overseas Study

The degree certificate and transcript may be used, but the exact required list needs confirmation.

Business/Corporate

The certified copy of the corporate register and business registration certificate may be used, but the exact required list needs confirmation.

We do not assert that "submission to the UK always requires all of these specific documents." The exact required documents vary by receiving agency, so please be sure to confirm with that agency.

Documents Brought from the UK to Korea

If you are submitting a document issued in the UK to Korea, it must go through the FCDO apostille process.

Issuing agency

UK apostilles are issued solely by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) Legalisation Office in Milton Keynes. The Korean Embassy in the UK does not issue apostilles — it only provides notarial services.

Fees and e-Apostille

Since a 2023 fee restructure, the UK offers Standard, e-Apostille, and Urgent service tiers. The e-Apostille option applies only to documents that are already e-signed PDFs — birth, marriage, and death certificates, and police certificates, still require the paper-based process.

Because the Korean Embassy in the UK cannot issue apostilles, all UK apostilles must go through the FCDO Legalisation Office directly. Please plan submission timing accordingly.
