Can I get a Korean document apostilled while living abroad?
Yes. The Overseas Koreans Agency accepts proxy applications, where family members, acquaintances or agencies apply for the apostille on your behalf. Overseas residents can proceed without coming to Korea: obtain the document → prepare a power of attorney → proxy filing in Korea → overseas delivery.
At a glance
- The Overseas Koreans Agency accepts proxy applications by family members, acquaintances, agencies and company employees (with the applicant's ID, the representative's ID and a power of attorney confirming authority, among others).
- Public documents eligible for e-Apostille can be apostilled by you directly, free of charge, on apostille.go.kr, even from abroad.
- Apostilles for Korean documents are issued by the Overseas Koreans Agency and the Ministry of Justice in Korea, so they are processed in Korea, not at an embassy in your country of residence.
- The government fee is KRW 1,000 per apostille; notarization, translation, embassy legalization and shipping are separate.
What overseas residents can do themselves, and what needs a representative
What you can do yourself — Public documents eligible for e-Apostille (apostille.go.kr) can be issued online and apostilled right away. Eligible documents are certain documents issued by the Supreme Court, Ministry of Education, Gov24, Korean National Police Agency, Military Manpower Administration, Human Resources Development Service of Korea, National Tax Service, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and Overseas Koreans Agency (list by agency per the Consulate General in Mumbai, as of 2026-02-26).
What needs a representative in Korea — Documents not eligible for e-Apostille, private documents that must be notarized first (powers of attorney, contracts, private university academic records, etc.), and consular confirmation and embassy legalization for non-Convention countries all require submitting documents to the Integrated Civil Service Center of the Overseas Koreans Agency or an embassy, so a representative in Korea handles them.
In what order does the remote service proceed?
- Confirm requirements — We confirm the destination country, receiving institution, document list and translation language.
- Obtain documents — You issue them online yourself (Gov24, Supreme Court Electronic Family Relations Registration System, etc.), or we explain how they can be issued in Korea.
- Prepare a power of attorney — You sign the Overseas Koreans Agency power of attorney form and prepare a copy of your ID.
- Notarization and translation — If the document is private or the translation needs authentication, notarization and certified translation are done in Korea.
- Proxy filing — We apply for the apostille (or consular confirmation) at the Integrated Civil Service Center of the Overseas Koreans Agency and, for non-Convention countries, complete embassy legalization in Korea.
- Overseas delivery — The completed originals are shipped internationally to your overseas address.
How do I prepare the power of attorney and ID?
According to the Overseas Koreans Agency, proxy applications require the applicant's ID, the representative's ID and a power of attorney needed to confirm the representative's authority, among others; for company documents, the business registration certificate, the original seal certificate and an original power of attorney stamped with the registered seal are required. The power of attorney form and a completed sample are available on the Overseas Koreans Agency website.
Confirm with the competent authority — Whether an original or a copy of a power of attorney signed abroad is accepted, and the requirements for ID copies, may differ by document type and intake rules. We check against the Overseas Koreans Agency's rules and let you know before proceeding.
How long does it take, and what is the government fee?
For in-person applications at the Overseas Koreans Agency, up to 10 documents per applicant are returned within 1 hour on average, 10–50 documents at 09:30 the next day, and agency filings or more than 50 documents within 3 days. On top of this come the time to obtain documents, notarization and translation, embassy legalization and international shipping. The government fee is KRW 1,000 per apostille or consular confirmation (electronic revenue stamp). For details, see Apostille Processing Time and Government Fees.
